Countywide community effort to culminate with Dec.9 Holiday Food Drive on the Square

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (Nov. 29, 2016) – Marion County is once again encouraging residents and businesses to help those in need this holiday season by participating in the annual “Bring the Harvest Home” campaign. “We are asking our community to come together again to help bring the harvest home for Marion County’s neediest residents during the Christmas season,” said Marion County Commissioner Kathy Bryant.

Residents and businesses may donate to help stock area food pantries by collecting and donating nonperishable items as follows:

Dry foods and complementary goods (rice, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, crackers, peanut butter and jelly). Plastic containers preferred.

Canned meats (corned beef, corned beef hash, ham, and tuna).

Canned vegetables and fruit.

-Baby Items (baby cereal, diapers, and lotion).

Toiletries (soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper).

The effort to collect canned food and toiletry donations will culminate on Friday, Dec. 9, with a Holiday Food Drive from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Square in downtown Ocala. Residents may drop off donations at this event or at many other locations through Dec. 8. For a full list of drop-off locations (including public libraries, city and county fire stations, Sheriff’s Office district offices and more) visit www.bringtheharvesthome.com .

“We are providing assistance to approximately 500 families each week right now,” said Karla Grimsley, Interfaith Emergency Services CEO. “This food drive is what ensures that those who come to us in December get an adequate amount of food; not just for a holiday meal, but for multiple days.”

Bring the Harvest Home benefits Interfaith Emergency Services, Brother’s Keeper, and the Salvation Army. Partners in the effort include: Marion County Board of County Commissioners, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, City of Ocala, Marion County Tax Collector, Ocala Police Department, Ocala/Marion County Chamber and Economic Partnership and Marion County Supervisor of Elections.
